Want to know more about your favorite makers and creatives?
This week I asked Brittany Schouwstra, the gifted maker behind Little Arrow Market, to join us for a fun little Q&A session. Brittany kindly agreed to let us pick her incredibly creative and talented brain for a few minutes and now I’m so excited to share this week’s Maker Spotlight with you!
What is your favorite color?
What is your favorite food?
Spiced gouda or double cream brie.
What is your favorite treat?
What is your favorite non-shop related hobby?
Cooking. I used to work in a kitchen, and I loved the creativity and detail behind all things culinary!
I am definitely a dog person!
If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be and why?
If I were a tree, I would be a Maple. Very Canadian, and I’d like to think I was sweet.
Who are you?
I’m Brittany! I am a stay at home mom to three adorable kids! Once upon a time I used to cook. I’ve always had a creative side to me, so it made sense that I absolutely loved taking ingredients and making them into something spectacular and delicious!
What do you do or make?
Little Arrow Market is all about baby and toddler items! Fun and functional items that have been handmade with care! As a mom I know how important it is to have safe and durable products for kids, everything that I make for my shop has passed the inspection of a careful mom! Not only are my items safe, but they’re beautiful as well! I just love finding and using beautiful, trendy fabrics! When I’m shopping at the fabric store I can’t resist those beautiful vintage style floral prints and modern trendy arrows!
When I was expecting me and my husband’s first child, I had to put away my professional kitchen knives and focus on preparing for my baby. I found out quickly that my love for cooking stemmed from my love of creativity and crafting! I started to crochet more seriously and from there I made baby blankets, hats, and toys in abundance! Sewing had been added to my list of hobbies as I tried to keep up the bib demands of three very messy eaters! All of my products have been first made and fine tuned because of a need that arose in my own home.
What or who inspires you?
My children are the people in my life who inspire me most when it comes to baby items! Their needs have spurred on my creativity and have made me learn my craft better. Though walking through the fabric aisles are inspiration in themselves! I can’t walk past a beautiful fabric without being immediately inspired to make something beautiful.
What is the hardest part of running your business?
The hardest part of running my small business is finding time. I’m always trying to come up with new products and releasing more options for the products I currently have. As any mom would tell you, finding time with three kids is pretty difficult.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received and/or what advice would you give to a maker who is just starting out?
As a maker who really is just starting out, I’ve really appreciated the cheerleaders in my life who encourage me to keep going! Don’t give up, and be confident in what you make. Your confidence in your shop and your product will really show through!
